Dr. Smith graduated from Michigan State University in 1966 receiving a B.S. degree. He attended medical school at the University of Michigan and was awarded his M.D. in 1970. After an Internship at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI, 1970 to 1971, Dr. Smith did Postgraduate training in the United States Air Force, 1971 to 1973. Following his years in the Air Force, he became a Family Medicine physician in Chelsea, MI until he retired in 2010. At the same time, he was an Adjunct Assistant Professor and Lecturer at the University of Michigan Medical School and the University of Michigan School of Nursing.
Dr. Smith was the Deputy Medical Examiner for Washtenaw County from 1973 to 1992.
Dr. Smith is concerned about quality care and has served on the Quality Assurance Committee at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and on the Qualtity Assurance Committee at Chelsea Community Hospital since 1973.
Dr. Smith continues to be active in the profession of medicine. He is currently a long time Board of Directors member for the Washtenaw County Medical Society; Vice Chairman Board of Directors, Physicians Credentials Verification Services; and Board of Directors member of Michigan Doctor's PAC. From 2001 through 2010 he was the Director of the 14th District of the Michigan State Medical Society.
