Dr. Carman received his B.S. in Zoology at the University of Michigan in 1966. He was awarded his MD degree in 1970 from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center.  Dr. Carman returned to Michigan for his  internship at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor,  1970 – 1971.  From  1971 to 1973, he served as a Lieutenant, Medical Corp, U.S. Navy.  His residency was completed at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in 1976.  Married with 2 grown children, Dr. Carman is an avid (but average) golfer and an enthusiastic grandfather.   He has committed over 30 years to training and educating medical residents.
